Unless you are retired or have a lifetime appointment you are preparing for your next interview. As educators, we always want to help people improve their skills.
Rarely does a particular school or degree completely prepare a candidate for a particular position. Doctors, lawyers, engineers, HVAC technicians, welders, etc. are specifically trained. Even with a specific degree, it may take years of training to learn the valuable nuances of a specific position.
Most degrees, even technical ones, simply say to the employer – I can learn. I can follow directions, complete tasks on time, and work with others. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Some employers today are asking to see the work products that you have completed and shipped prior to any interviews. Recently, I came across an opportunity to collaborate with a nationally known leadership and marketing expert in an online project. To select candidates for the project, he asked for a link to a website or two that would allow him to see my work. He didn’t care about my degrees or experience. He wanted to see my work. Novel!
When you show a potential employer your work you are asking “am I worth training.” If you want the answer to be yes, you had better do good work.
