A Legacy

For centuries people have worried about leaving a legacy.  Especially Kings.

For some a legacy is raising decent children who can pass on the family name.

For others it is leaving a body of work or buildings with their name on them that will stand for some time.

Some want to make as much money as possible.

Most just want to enjoy what they do.

A couple of years ago, I was wandering around an old cemetery in Cheraw, SC.

Most stones had the usual “Beloved Father” or “Faithful Wife”.  Great things to aspire to in life.

As I wandered around this cemetery on a hot South Carolina day, I came across the following grave marker.  The more I have thought about it, the more I have been impressed with this unknown man over any other.

Francis Wilson

Died 1835

Cheraw, SC

  • He lives in the hearts of an affectionate family of which he was the honored head.
  • He lives in the respect of a large circle of society of which he was an active and useful member.
  • He lives in the memory of the Christian Church in which he was a worthy communicant.
  • He lives in Him who is the believer’s life.
  • The grave shall give up its dead, and he shall be raised incorruptible.
